Demanding Government Action Against Sexual Violence

The Situation: Rape and sexual violence against young girls in Mongolia has increased dramatically. Cases recently emerged of girls as young as six years old being raped in their classrooms.

The Rapid Response: The women of Mongolia took action. Mongolian Women’s Fund (MONES) works to raise funds in order to support initiatives for the advancement of Mongolian women and the protection of their human rights. With Urgent Action Fund support, MONES organized a massive awareness raising campaign, called the “Advocacy Campaign on Protecting Little Girls from Sexual Violence,” to pressure the government to act.

The Impact: Five national TV channels and three radio stations covered the events hosted by MONES. Following the campaign, the government initiated a program on eliminating sexual violence against minors through amending laws and developing enforcement mechanisms.
