The Situation: In May 2010, a transgender woman was murdered in Istanbul. Murder is an escalation of the day-to-day abuses transgender people face, including public beatings, arrests, and employment discrimination.
The Rapid Response: Urgent Action Fund supported Istanbul LGBTT to hold the Turkey’s first ever Transpride event.
The Impact: Hundreds of people attended the opening street theater performances and speeches; a hundred more attended educational panels about violence and human rights; and trans people made face-to-face, unabashed contact with the general public.
