Take Action Now!: Send an appeal letter to the Pakistani authorities demanding that they protect human rights defenders by bringing the perpetrators to justice and making these kinds of attacks a criminal offense.
Please join Urgent Action Fund and our partners in Pakistan in asking the Pakistani government to protect women’s human rights defenders, prevent future violence and guarantee and promote women’s right to equality.
Since October 2012, at least 20 activists and NGO workers have been killed in Pakistan, and many more harassed, threatened, or injured – including 15-year old girls’ education activist Malala Yousafzai who was shot in the head. This is especially concerning given that women, and those working to protect their rights, have been particularly targeted in these attacks.
Despite the recent surge in violence, neither regional nor federal governments appear to have taken any action to prevent or punish these murders and attacks. At the same time, local civil society organizations working in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) province and Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) region have condemned the recent attacks and called for the protection of human rights defenders in the country.
