2017 Annual Report

Mission: Urgent Action Fund partners with women’s movements worldwide to support women’s human rights defenders striving to create cultures of justice, equality and peace.

Sister Funds: In partnership with three sister funds, Urgent Action Fund-Africa, Urgent Action Fund-Latin America, and Urgent Action Fund-Asia & Pacific we provide support for women and gender non-binary human rights defenders in feminist movements worldwide.

Each sister Urgent Action Fund is today an independent and autonomous organization. Building on our shared history, we use a common rapid response model and work collaboratively to advocate for women’s human rights.

The Urgent Action Fund Sister Funds collectively support women’s leadership and activism in 110 countries around the world, including areas affected by armed conflict, escalating violence, political volatility, and extreme repression.

“The Urgent Action Fund fills a far too wide gap in philanthropy by making meaningful levels of funding for urgent opportunities impacting the most oppressed and marginalized (and resilient, impactful, wise and resourceful) — it is quite literally a game changer and a lifesaver.”

“The most difficult thing I am facing is being at the forefront alone”

Jalila al Salman, Bahraini human rights defender and torture survivor

“2017 was a year of push back, of resistance. Last year we saw 120% increase in security grants compared to the previous year. In addition to basic protections —security cameras, relocation and legal services—the security needs are also holistic including digital security and attention to the sustainability and wellbeing of activists.”

Kate Kroeger, Executive Director Urgent Action Fund

Grantee partner, Health and Rural Development Balochistan utilized their security grant to cover the costs of security guards, safe transportation, and mobilizing efforts to prepare women for civic participation in a contested election 14 years in the making.

Resist & Reclaim

Amplifying the defense of human rights in the United States

Matching the increased request for security grants worldwide, security requests amongst our US grantee partners have increased by 300% since November 2016.

Our US grantee partners work at the intersections of many movements. Grantee partner, Black LGBTQIA+ Migrant Project used an opportunity grant to power map, do outreach, and mobilize to stop the over-policing, detention, and deportation of Black LGBTQIA+ immigrants.

The Sister Fund Model Grows

In late 2017, Urgent Action Fund-Asia & Pacific was launched with offices in Australia and the Philippines. Through the Sister Funds, the Urgent Action Funds have provided over $9 million in rapid response grants to thousands of women and transgender human rights defenders around the world. The Sister Fund model uniquely blends the relevance and efficacy of locally-led programs with the power of a global network.

Local leadership informing a powerful, women-led global network.
