The Feminist Response to Protect Reproductive Rights: One Year After the Overturn of Roe V. Wade

By Keishla Gonzalez-Quiles

Urgent Action Fund for Feminist Activism

June 24th, 2023, marked the one-year anniversary of the unfortunate overturn of Roe v. Wade, a landmark decision that guaranteed the right to safe and legal abortions in the United States. This decision has had far-reaching consequences, impacting the lives and autonomy of individuals of all genders. Reproductive rights are not just a women’s issue- these rights are about bodily autonomy, freedom, and justice for all.

When the threat to Roe v. Wade emerged, Urgent Action Fund for Feminist Activism swiftly mobilized to support frontline feminist activists fighting to protect reproductive rights and maintain access to safe abortions. Our rapid response grants provide vital resources to advocates, organizations, and communities that push back against unjust policies, protect reproductive rights, and ensure that access to safe abortions remains available to all who need it.

Read on to learn about some of the work we’ve supported on this issue in the last year:

Activism Through Art
The BlackGold Movement, a feminist hip-hop artivists coalition, is raising awareness about the overturn of Roe v. Wade through art and music. With funding from Urgent Action Fund for Feminist Activism, they produced an EP called “I am Jane Roe”, which was released last year, and hosted a social media contest encouraging other artivists to remix their EP to highlight the threat to reproductive freedom. Listen to the “I am Jane Roe” EP here.

Reproductive Rights Through an Intersectional Approach

With a grant from Urgent Action Fund for Feminist Activism, The Feminist Front mobilized Southwest feminist youth of color to advocate for reproductive health rights in light of the overturn of Roe v. Wade. The group advocates against abortion bans and established a regional network for coordinated actions, political education, base building, and ongoing mobilizations.

We know that the battle for reproductive rights and safe access to abortions is far from over. Urgent Action Fund for Feminist Activism remains committed to supporting activists across our regions defending reproductive rights and access to safe abortions because we firmly believe abortion is healthcare. The path ahead will be challenging, but with collective action and unwavering support, we can strive toward a world where reproductive rights are upheld, access to safe abortions is safeguarded, and every individual’s right to make decisions about their own body is respected.

Take action today and help secure a future of reproductive freedom for all. Donate now to support frontline feminist activists in their mission to protect reproductive justice.
